The holidays are here
…with that, Sweco’s annual Seasons greeting to employees and clients around the world!
We are very happy to once again have been asked to produced a one-minute animated commercial for Sweco with a Christmas theme. The film is set in a city that feels worn, grey, and somewhat out of date. A client asks Sweco for help in making the city better and more future-proof. The solution is Sweco’s own AI service, SwecoGPT. When activated, the AI characters quite literally step out of the computer and spread throughout the city. They begin improving everything from power grids and urban planning to hospitals and metro systems. Slowly but surely, the city transforms into a more modern, vibrant, and sustainable place.
This 2D animated film is based on illustrations created in Moho, while all animation was produced in After Effects. By incorporating 2.5D techniques, depth and movement are created through parallax effects. All backgrounds and characters were designed and rigged specifically for the project. The result is a warm, narrative-driven film that engagingly demonstrates how Sweco helps shape the cities of the future.
Character rigging
For recurring characters, it is both practical and efficient to invest a bit of extra time early in the project to create what is known as a character rig. This allows us to avoid hand-animating every individual movement and instead work faster and more consistently.
It is also important to think in advance about how much movement the character actually needs. Not all rigs need to be designed for every possible scenario if the intended use is already known. This saves time in both the creation and animation phases, as overly complex rigs can make a project heavier and less responsive.
Shown here is an example of one of our rigged characters, taken directly from the film.
Localized versions
As Sweco has more than one hundred offices, over 20,000 employees, and approximately 150,000 assignments each year, the film is viewed by a large and diverse audience. This also means that a significant number of language versions need to be produced on an ongoing basis. As a result, it becomes especially important to automate the text without affecting the visual expression or compromising the film’s overall style.
Shown here are a few examples of how this was implemented in this year’s film.
