Winter tales

Introduction

Beneath the frost of a timeless night, when winter’s hush falls over the starry sky, Maria Nilsdotter’s Winter Tales awaken. Ancient stories of courage, protection, and strength; of beauty, transformation, and desire. This is how Maria Nilsdotter herself describes her latest collection, and our task was to bring movement to her paintings in a way worthy of that description.

7 films over 7 weeks

Over the course of seven weeks, from November 6 until Christmas, Maria Nilsdotter shared the films one by one across her channels. In addition to the introductory film, six in-depth films were also released, each focusing on a specific piece of jewelry.

Processen

In a project like this, the process is somewhat different, as the illustrations are created painted on canvas and then scanned. Unlike digital illustration, there are no inherent layers to work from, which means the material requires more extensive preparation before animation can begin.

This presents certain challenges, as a significant amount of work goes into isolating and refining elements to make them suitable for animation. At the same time, the analog approach adds an extra layer of authenticity and a tactile quality to the overall expression. In addition to the illustrations, the jewelry was also photographed and required the same type of isolation in order to be integrated into the animation.
